Apple may soon allow developers in the European Union to use its tap-to-pay technology.Report from Reuters EU regulators have approved Apple’s proposal to open up its payments system next month, potentially ending a two-year legal battle.
In 2022, the European Commission accused Apple of abusing its “dominant position in the mobile wallet market.” Apple claimed that it blocked third-party payment apps from using the iPhone’s NFC (near field communication) hardware “for the benefit of its Apple Pay solution.”
The European Commission announced earlier this year that Apple has committed to allowing third-party payment providers to freely use the iPhone’s NFC capabilities. Apple’s proposal would give developers access to Face ID for user authentication and allow iPhone users to set third-party apps as their default payment option. Reuters I will report it.
According to reports, the European Commission is expected to accept Apple’s proposal in May, but it is asking Apple to make several changes before that. If approved, the proposal would remain in place for 10 years. However, these changes may not be seen outside the EU, as Apple has yet to confirm whether it will open up its NFC to developers in those regions.
