IRVING — Las Colinas Country Club hosted more than 60 children from the First Tee of Greater Dallas and First Tee of Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon as part of its annual Celebrity Invitational Classic celebration. A golf clinic was held for.
Children learned valuable golf skills such as driving, chipping, and putting through creative drills taught by PGA Tour Champion golfer Doug Barron and Golf Channel host and former professional golfer Blair O’Neill .
“I love coming out here and helping kids,” O’Neill told the media. “I have two sons and they love golf, so it’s fun to watch them grow up and play golf. I started when I was 11 years old, so a lot of kids They’re off to a faster start than me. They’re excited about it. They know what they’re doing, so we improve their game. I hope I can help you.”
O’Neal and Barron are just two of several professional golfers and celebrities scheduled to compete in this year’s tournament, which is expected to bring $3 million to the Dallas area. The tournament raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Momentus Institute, First Tee Greater Dallas, First Tee Fort Worth, and the Invitational Gateway Program.
The Gateway program gives youth golfers the opportunity to earn junior memberships at inviting clubs, and 14-year-old John Tijerina, a junior member at Las Colinas Country Club, is looking to improve his personal experience by interacting with and learning from professionals. “You really learn a lot when you’re with professionals,” Tijerina told the media. “You have a lot of experience and that’s why I like being here. You give me so many tips and teach me so much. I appreciate it so much. It’s so helpful. I remember being with them last year, I think he made an effort, he was a lot of fun to work with. It was really fun to be here with them.”
Other players participating in this weekend’s tournament include former Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo, Emmitt Smith and DeMarcus Ware, former Texas Rangers’ Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and AJ Pierzynski, Also included are Major League Baseball legends such as Derek Holland, former Dallas star Marty Turco, and: Roger Clemens, Joe Carter, Greg Maddux, Albert Pujols and more.
Romo is the defending amateur champion and will aim to defend his title during the pro-am.
