He stressed the need for open innovation and criticized the idea that the United States will continue to have an advantage over China in AI.
Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, said on Wednesday that it would be “just wrong” to blanket shut down China with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Asked how the US should tackle the AI race with China, Zuckerberg said there’s a notion that everything needs to be contained, “but I think that’s just wrong.”
The United States thrives on open, decentralized innovation, he said: “That’s how our economy works and how we create great things.”
The Facebook co-founder also said that staying five or 10 years ahead of China in AI technology is not a “reasonable goal” that the US can maintain.
“I think a reasonable goal is for U.S. companies to continue to build the best AI systems and maintain a durable lead, say six or eight months,” he said, adding, “If the U.S. can maintain that advantage over the long term, that’s a very big advantage.”
