Aldi has implemented a new AI shopping experience in just one location.
After it was announced on Friday, April 19 that Chicago Aldi would be launching ALDIgo, the company revealed to PEOPLE that it has no plans to expand on the new checkout-free shopping experience.
ALDIgo is a new technology innovation from the grocer and checkout-free technology company Grabango. This experience is currently running at the Aldi outlet located at 2275 West Galena Boulevard in Aurora, Illinois. His first ALDIgo location is approximately 10 miles from the company’s U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois.
With ALDIgo, customers can shop as usual. However, there are no checkout lines, cashiers, or scanners. Rather, the ceiling is equipped with sophisticated computer vision cameras and ceiling-mounted scanners that track customers’ items. Customers can pay using credit cards, debit cards, or the Grabango app.
An ALDI spokesperson issued the following statement to PEOPLE: “ALDI has launched ALDIgo, a checkout-free shopping experience powered by Grabango technology, at one of its Chicago-area grocery stores. ALDI is innovative and committed to providing shoppers with a best-in-class experience. We are continually looking for new ways to do this, and this is an example of that in action.”
The statement continued: “While we are excited to see our customers working on this technology, we have no information to share regarding expansion at this time. At this location, shoppers will still have the option to check out at a traditional checkout. Masu.”
The new grocery store concept is similar to Amazon’s Just Walk Out at participating Amazon Fresh Market and Whole Foods Market stores.
