Baby Reindeer – Netflix
(Left) Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning Baby Reindeer
Netflix
While a $170 million defamation lawsuit is certainly not the attention that the zeitgeist-dominating miniseries based on Richard Gadd’s harrowing tale of a woman’s stalker and the resulting psychological destruction was looking for, the legal action brought by the real-life Martha Fiona Harvey is Baby Reindeer It’s a show you can’t and shouldn’t look away from.
Diarra from Detroit – BET+
Star-in-waiting Diarra Kilpatrick landed her breakout role as a divorced Motor City teacher navigating a dark path of relationships and crime. The eight-episode first season, executive produced by Kenya Barris and Detroit native Kilpatrick, Detroit’s Diarra is a genre-subversive piece propelled by unique star power, and it’s also very entertaining.
The Perfect Man – Netflix

Mark Hill/Netflix
In the review on May 2 A perfect man, I wrote: “The performances from Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane are always superb, but the Emmy winners and Oscar nominees rarely deliver performances as good as they do in Netflix’s Tom Wolfe adaptation. Complete ManThe only change I’d make to it would be to put more emphasis on this great duo.
Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show – HBO
Jerrod Carmichael
Max
Jerrod Carmichael is one of the funniest and sharpest comedians of his generation, or any generation, ever. He’s also brutally honest, sometimes to a fault. He came out as gay in his Emmy-winning 2022 HBO comedy special. Rosaniel, Carmichael is putting a harsh spotlight on himself in the eight-part documentary series, which premieres March 29, but in a good way: he has very little to say.
The Sympathizer – HBO
(Left) Hua Xuande and Robert Downey Jr. Sympathizer
HBO
What do you get when you take Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the Vietnam War, aka the American War, add Robert Downey Jr.’s multi-role performance (the Oscar winner is also a real EP), add the show-running talents of Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, and a starring role from Sandra Oh? A heart-wrenching, realpolitik explosion that sits on the shoulders of Hoa Xuande. And on the shoulders of this superstar, it’s no wonder. Sympathizer itself.
Echo – Disney+

It’s clear that Marvel is at a turning point, both in film and television. But as I noted in my January 9 movie review: echo: “Alaqua Cox reprises her starring role, Hawkeye Maya Lopez as the assassin, 5 episodes echo It strips away much of the endless provocation and saccharine atmosphere of the last decade’s Marvel movies and shows and tells a complete story.”
Co-star Rescue DogsDevery Jacobs EnglishChaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will return, echo, As I said in my review, it’s “heartbreaking yet uplifting,” and Charlie Cox’s daredevil.
True Detective: Night Country – HBO
(Left) Jodie Foster and Kali Reis True Detective: Night Country
HBO
Jodie Foster. Kali Reis. Alaska. Showrunner Issa Lopez has expertly crafted a gripping murder mystery that resets a franchise that was understandably left desperately wanting, with six shocking, disturbing episodes that stand on their own. And did we mention Jodie Foster and Kali Reis?
Big Mood – Tubi
(LR) Lydia West & Nicola Coughlan
The creative process, not taking medication, bipolar disorder, stupid psychiatrists, and the limits of my best friend’s patience – created by Camilla Whitehill Big MoodNow, let’s leave all this and the wonderful writing in the hands of Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West. Bridgerton and It’s a sin Are vets good? No. Like it needs to be seen more widely. Big Moodthese aspiring superstars are amazing.
X-Men ’97 – Disney+
(From left): Magneto (voiced by Matthew Waterson), Gambit (voiced by AJ LoCascio), and Rogue (voiced by Lenore Zann) X-MEN ’97
Marvel Animation / Disney
A revival of the classic 90s animated series, X-Men ’97 The drama was fueled from the start by the sudden departure of show mastermind Beau DeMayo before the premiere. For many shows, animated or live-action, that would have been a trigger, but for the 10-episode first season, X-Men ’97 It adds to the sophistication and poignancy of a series that asks big questions without easy answers or nostalgia for the Clinton era. And I don’t just mean episode five.
Shogun – FX
(From left): Hiroto Kanai & Hiroyuki Sanada Shogun
Katie Yu/FX
The latest film adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestseller wasn’t supposed to be the talk of 2024. But thanks to some unexpected circumstances and some good timing from the TV gods, FX has turned this saga of an isolated Englishman in 17th century Japan, written by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and starring Sanada Hiroyuki, into an epic 10-episode film that completely wipes out all other contenders for the throne. Shogun Though it has moved from its originally planned limited series status to being renewed for a second and third season, that still might not be enough to satisfy die-hard fans.
