Lily Gladstone made history by winning Best Actress at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday.
She won for her role as Molly Burkhardt. Murderers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, made her the first Indigenous actor to win in this category. Her character was an Osage woman who married a key accomplice in a systematic assassination of the Osage people in the 1920s.
After receiving the honor from Jessica Chastain, Gladstone took to the stage and thanked his fellow actors for being “here in solidarity with all the other unions” after last year’s Hollywood strike. I’m proud,” he said.
“I feel good about what you’ve done and are doing,” she said. “This has been a tough year for all of us. For those in this room and for those not in this room.”
In his speech, Gladstone (who uses both she and they pronouns) recognized what a “gift” it is to be able to make a living as an actor.
“Victory is just around the corner. We’re finally on set. We’re getting to tell the story,” she added. “We bring empathy to a world that needs empathy. It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close our hearts and stop feeling, but we all have the courage to feel.” It humanizes people, it brings people out of the shadows. It brings visibility.”
Gladstone later encouraged the audience and domestic viewers to “keep telling the story to everyone in this room and to everyone watching overseas.” People who are not actors but have voices have stories they want to hear. Thank you to all the compassionate souls and storytellers in this room tonight. Keep speaking your truth and speaking up for each other. ”

Gladstone (Blackfeet) made history this awards season for the first time this year, winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Drama in January. She became the first Indigenous actor to win the award in the 81-year history of the awards ceremony.
She is also the first Native American actor to be recently nominated for Best Actress. Gladstone also received awards from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.
Throughout the season, Gladstone continued to advocate for Indigenous representation on the big and small screen, using his acceptance speeches, interviews, and red carpet appearances as educational opportunities. She has also supported other Indigenous people who have chosen to opt out of viewing. Murderers of the Flower Moon Because depictions of violence against Osage can be traumatic.
