The Metaplatform Oversight Committee announced its decision to expand its scope to include social media platform Threads. This expansion allows users on Threads to appeal Meta’s content moderation decisions and provides a means to address concerns about content removal or retention.
In addition to the 130 million people using Threads, Meta can now refer cases regarding content on the social media platform to the Oversight Board. Board members evaluate Meta’s content decisions for threads based on Instagram’s Community Guidelines, which also apply to threads.
The independent oversight board, which is funded by Meta Platforms but operates autonomously, was established in late 2020 to review content decisions on Facebook and Instagram. The board, made up of academics, rights experts and lawyers, will make decisions on whether to uphold or overturn Meta’s actions regarding content removal or permissions.
The Oversight Board expressed its belief that extending its oversight to Threads will contribute to increased transparency, a global approach, and respect for freedom of expression and other human rights within the platform.
Meta will retain the authority to implement policies and enforcement recommendations based on the Oversight Board’s decisions regarding threads for a period of 12 months. However, as the Board made clear, implementing product-specific recommendations is not within Meta’s remit.
