“Orion and the Darkness”
Streaming
Fans of writer-director Charlie Kaufman’s playful and complex art films, such as Synecdoche, New York and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, will love the animated children’s film credits. You might be surprised to see his name listed. But while this adaptation of Emma Yarrett’s picture book (directed by Sean Charmatz, based on a screenplay by Kaufman) is very much aimed at children, it also has some of Kaufman’s signature layers of metafiction. Jacob Tremblay plays the voice of Orion, a boy who is afraid of the dark. Orion is afraid of the dark, and Dirk (Paul Walter Hauser) appears physically and attempts to show him the wonders of the night. Colin Hanks plays the voice of the older Orion, explaining this boyhood adventure to his nervous daughter who continues to wonder what happened to her father’s interpretation. The tension between the story itself and the way it is told adds a poignant adult feel to the family-friendly fun.
‘one day’

Based on David Nichol’s novel (previously made into a film in 2011), this romantic dramatic miniseries follows 20 years of the lives of two Edinburgh University classmates. They go on one painfully awkward date after his 1988 graduation, and then spend much of their adolescence together. We keep in touch, but we’re not a couple. Leo Woodall and Ambika Modh play distant friends who reunite on the same day every year in “One Day,” and how their careers and relationships undergo dramatic changes, often driving them further apart. is drawing. Just like this book, this is a story about love and time between two very different characters, who could actually be perfect for each other if they can get past their hang-ups.

In this romantic comedy, Gina Rodriguez plays a New York sportswriter named Mac. Mac, along with his best friend and colleague Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), are masters at putting on “theatrics” in singles bars, telling lies to convince each other of their love. Quarry the bed. Then Mac meets Nick (Tom Ellis), a famous war correspondent who may be worth more than a one-night stand. Directed by Trish See from a script by Whit Anderson, “The Players” combines the mechanics of a heist movie with the trappings of an old-fashioned big-city love story, as a movie begins to realize that it might be time to grow up. I draw portraits of middle-aged adults. Get up and quit the game.
