Last week I learned that Netflix was making a Poptarts movie. At first I thought it was an April Fool’s joke, but to my surprise, the streaming service is actually releasing a movie that focuses on sugary toaster pastries. And what’s even more shocking is that this could be one of the best Netflix movies of the year, according to the first trailer.
“Unfrosted: The Pop-Tarts Story,” set to arrive on Netflix next month, chronicles the battle between cereal giants Kellogg and Post to start a breakfast revolution in the 1960s. No, seriously, this is a real movie…
The comedy marks the directorial debut of the legendary Jerry Seinfeld, and the popular comic also stars as Bob Kavanagh, a Kellogg executive with a dream of creating the world’s first toaster pastry and changing breakfast forever.
The cast list includes a wealth of talent, including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant (as Tony the Tiger), Amy Schumer, Peter Dinklage, and Christian Slater. It appears that Jerry did some favors for this production as casting sheets were being stacked up.
This comedy marks the directorial debut of the legendary Jerry Seinfeld.
Netflix describes the film as “a story of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and a menacing milkman,” and on the surface, Unfrosted seems pretty hard to take seriously. But from our first look, the makers of the film are well aware of that fact and are starting to slip. Everything about the first trailer suggests it’s a high-concept movie that has a lot of fun with a ridiculous premise.
The film appears to be a parody of recent biopics that focus on the creation of products/brands such as “BlackBerry”, “The Founder”, and “Air”, but the idea was created by Jerry Sign It is thought that the name comes from a joke that Feld often told in his movies. Watching his stand-up set, it’s very clear that “Unfrosted” knows exactly what it’s about. This Netflix movie won’t be in next year’s Oscars, but like Pop-Tarts themselves, it could be another high-octane, fun treat that makes up for any lack of nutrition in its smooth sweetness.
Now we just have to wait for the full pastry and be able to judge whether “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tarts Story” hits the landing and strikes the right comedic balance. The film is set to arrive on Netflix on Friday, May 3rd, so you won’t have to wait long to decide for yourself.
