According to Daily NK’s investigation, North Korea’s military recently established a new department tasked with promoting the use of AI technology for national defense.
A North Korean military source at Daily NK, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that the General Staff’s Combat Training Department “established a new sub-organization called the Electronic Warfare and AI Operations Command in late March and is filling it with skilled engineers from the defense and military sectors.”
According to sources, the operational objective of the new division is to improve the country’s modernized electronic weapons stockpile and enhance the military’s operational command capabilities using AI technology.
To that end, the ministry is working with the Ministry of Defense’s General Directorate of Acquisition, to develop and deploy an AI-based electronic warfare support system, the official said.
In fact, the Ministry of Defense is planning to develop a program to automate data analysis and operational planning by the end of October and build an AI-based electronic warfare support system, with the goal of using the system to enable faster and more accurate decision-making during wartime and improve the military’s operational command capabilities.
According to sources, the General Staff believes that developing systems that utilize AI technology is extremely important for increasing the speed and efficiency of electronic warfare responses during wartime.
The North Korean military’s move appears to be a response to the growing importance of electronic warfare in modern warfare, and essentially the military is laying the foundations for maximizing its battle command capabilities by developing programs that use the latest technology.
“The General Staff has emphasized that the new division will play an important role in national defense,” the official said. “Internal staff expects that if program development proceeds as planned, the operational and combat command structure of some electronic warfare units may be changed before the start of winter training in December.”
