Google has begun removing updates and changes to its smart home products, impacting users of Works-with-Nest, Dopcam, and Nest-Secure. The Works with Nest (WWN) developer program officially ended on September 29, 2023. Dopcam and Nest Secure will follow suit on his April 8th.
Google’s last minute mitigation offer for Works-with-Nest and Dropcam users
Although the Works-with-Nest developer program ended last year, 9to5Google has confirmed that existing connections will remain active until they are completely inaccessible (5-60 days). One alternative that Google will introduce in the coming months is the Google Home Script Editor, which will allow users to create advanced home automations for their existing devices.
Starting April 8, 2024, Dropcam and Dropcam Pro cameras will no longer work in the Nest app. So, if you want to access anything related to these devices, you must download your video history by this date. Additionally, owners of Dropcams that have been active in the past 28 days will receive an email with a free Nest Cam subscription prior to the shutdown date.
Additionally, as part of the transition process for current Nest Aware subscribers, you can get a Nest Cam for free or half price by following the email notifications we send you. Additionally, all Dropcam devices provided by Google are recycled for free (if obtained from official channels).
Nest Secure will also be shut down and the Nest app will be retired.
Starting April 8, 2024, the Nest Secure system will stop working completely and the Nest app will stop working by the end of that day. Eligible U.S. customers whose Nest Secure system was still up and running within the past four weeks will receive an ADT self-setup consisting of a smart home hub, door/window sensor, motion sensor, and 12 months of professional alarm monitoring. You will have the opportunity to use the system for free.
On the other hand, if a customer doesn’t want ADT, they can choose a $200 Google Store credit instead. The move follows Google ending its NEST Secure product in 2020, while ADT introduced a modern replacement product built around traditional users.
These updates demonstrate how Google continues to streamline its smart ecosystem for home applications, thereby creating new solutions for users’ home security and automation needs. To achieve this objective, users should remember these dates and associated offers to feel at ease.
