CNBC reported that the US has passed enough boxes to pave a mile-wide road from Charlotte to Los Angeles more than three times. Amazon is trying to change that with a new effort to reduce waste.
The idea is to ship the product in its original packaging. However, achieving that requires a major process. According to Amazon, 11% of orders worldwide were shipped in the manufacturer’s original packaging, including shipments from brands like Clorox, McDonald’s, and Starbucks.
Amazon works with vendors to ensure packages are not damaged during shipping. It must withstand falling from conveyor belts and vibrations and shaking during transportation. The product is tested five times, and every time something breaks, Amazon helps you figure out what’s wrong and how it can be fixed. The company also uses customer feedback, including damage complaints, to improve its services.

However, some products, such as groceries and liquids, require a little more extra support. Amazon is experimenting with reusable bags. One of the biggest challenges is getting customers to change their habits and use environmentally friendly packaging.
Either way, it’s all about reducing waste and saving the planet, one shipment at a time.
