Sharjah Road Transport Authority (SRTA) has upgraded 48 traffic lights in the city with artificial intelligence.
The system has been in operation for about a month and uses a combination of sensors, cameras, and advanced algorithms to collect and analyze real-time traffic data.
Detects the number, type, and speed of vehicles at intersections. The data collected is processed using advanced algorithms that can quickly identify traffic flow patterns and trends, such as peak congestion times.
In high traffic scenarios, you can extend the duration of green lights in high traffic directions.

Based on this analysis, the AI system dynamically adjusts traffic light timing to accommodate varying traffic volumes.
“For example, in high traffic situations, the duration of green lights in the direction of high traffic may be extended, while in low traffic situations, green lights may be extended to facilitate smooth flow in other directions. It saves time,” said Chairman Engineer Dr. Yusif Alasmani. S.R.T.A.
“A key aspect of this technology is its ability to continually learn and adapt, and as more data accumulates over time, it will become increasingly capable of predicting traffic patterns and adjusting signal timing accordingly. Be more efficient.”
He said the system would ensure traffic signal timing is more responsive to real-time road conditions, potentially improving traffic flow by up to 30%.
SRTA’s broader plan to revamp the city’s transportation infrastructure includes building additional pedestrian bridges in high-pedestrian areas.
Towards electrification
SRTA has expanded its transition to sustainable transportation to include the deployment of more than 760 electric vehicles and has also added a fleet of electric buses.
Following the success of the pilot program with two electric buses, the authority has acquired 10 more electric buses, which are expected to enter service within the next six months.
A fleet of Tesla Model S and Model 3 electric vehicles was also launched.
“We currently have eight Teslas in our fleet and plan to increase this number in the future.Furthermore, we have agreed with Beeah Group to increase the number of charging stations from 50 to 200 within the next three to four years. I did,” he said. Dr. Alasmani.
SRTA is also working with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to improve the efficiency of major roads such as Al Ittihad Road, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and the Emirates Bypass.
These initiatives aim to streamline traffic flow and improve road safety.
SRTA has also launched a project to pave internal roads in 20 residential areas in Sharjah and the central region.
Another important development is the scheduled opening of an official bus route between Sharjah (Al Jubail) and Oman (Muscat) on February 22nd.
This was revealed during a meeting with reporters from various UAE media outlets as part of Sharjah Press Club’s Tawasul initiative.
The plan aims to facilitate communication between Sharjah authorities and the media.
