“Girls State”
Start streaming: April 5th
The 2020 documentary “Boys State” follows a group of Texas high school students as they attend a political-themed summer camp. In this sequel, directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBain explore a similar camp from a different perspective, following Missouri high school girls as they run for office, draft resolutions, and watch trials. It imitates the functions of state government. This special version of Missouri Girls’ State was held on the same campus as Boys’ State, prompting direct comparisons between the programs (with different levels of rigor). It also happened shortly after the draft of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision was leaked. There’s another layer to “Sugar” that’s revealed later in the season and is best left alone. Co-written by Kirk Ellis (best known for the miniseries “John Adams”) and Howard Corder (playwright behind “Boardwalk Empire”), “Franklin” is a fish out of water at times. Part comedy, part political thriller, it’s primarily a story of a man and a woman struggling to guide the direction of a rapidly changing world.
