FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (TCD) — A 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of traveling from Florida disguised as Amazon drivers and kidnapping a 7-month-old child from a relative’s home.
According to an affidavit cited by the Seattle Times, Marley Ardila Urrego told a relative, the child’s mother, to buy a new bed for the infant and have it delivered to her home in Federal Way on Feb. 20. He said he spoke with him. Her family moved into their residence about a week before the abduction.
On the day of the alleged delivery, Aldila Urrego’s partner, Chun Lai, went to the woman’s house disguised as an Amazon employee, carrying a clipboard and a box. When the woman opened the door, Lai allegedly punched her in the face several times and tied her ankles and wrists with a band. Aldila Urrego reportedly entered her home and restrained her mother as Lai picked up her baby. She reportedly placed the victim in an Amazon box.
The Seattle Times reported that Lai allegedly forced the mother and her 2-year-old child into a bedroom and gagged the woman with the child’s clothes.
According to KCPQ-TV, which also cited the affidavit, the woman managed to free herself from her restraints and called 911 before running outside with her 2-year-old child to search for the baby. The woman’s father reportedly told police and the FBI that he suspected Ardila Urrego of being involved in the kidnapping because she was insistent on knowing the woman’s new address. Reportedly, they have never had a close relationship.
Before the incident, Aldila Urrego reportedly told her family that she wanted to earn $70,000 by becoming a surrogate mother. She also reportedly commented on having her child and selling it.
Police chased the couple, who were driving a Honda Insight with Lai wearing a Florida license plate.
According to the Seattle Times, a Washington State Patrol trooper pulled Lai and Ardila Urrego over on a highway about 290 miles from Federal Way. The girl was reportedly found inside the car and an officer emailed a photo to police to confirm her identity.
They were arrested on charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, assault and robbery and are being held with bail set at $750,000.
“This case is highly unusual,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Jennifer Phillips reportedly wrote in the indictment.
Court documents also reportedly state that there is “no evidence that mental illness or substance abuse contributed to this crime.”
