Williams, 59, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia last year. Frontotemporal dementia is a form of cognitive decline that can cause memory loss and personality changes. However, her team only made her condition public this week. In 2022, Bruce Willis was diagnosed with the same condition.
Lifetime’s four-part documentary follows Williams’ family, friends, and care team as they deal with the emotional and physical toll of her condition, including alcoholism.
In the first episode, Williams talked about her relationship with alcohol: “I love vodka.”
But she added that her sister Wanda “hates that I’m a drinker” and her 23-year-old son Kevin Hunter Jr. “hates alcohol.”
In an on-camera interview for the second episode, Williams was asked by producers if there were any relationships he wanted to repair, and he admitted that his drinking had caused a rift with his loved ones.
“My son,” Williams tearfully answered.
When asked what kept them from repairing their relationship, she said, “Nothing, except that he doesn’t like drinking.”
At one point, Williams opened up and defended her choices, even though she recognized that her alcoholism was affecting her relationship with her only son.
“When I smoke, I smoke and when I drink, I drink,” Ms. Williams angrily told publicist Sean Zanotti during the filmed meeting.
Elsewhere in the episode, Williams’ manager Will Selby searches for hidden bottles of spirits in the former radio host’s apartment, changes a drink order at a restaurant to a mocktail, and goes on a rampage. Williams can be seen trying to control his drinking.
“Kevin doesn’t want his mom to use drugs,” he told the cameras about trying to get Williams to stop drinking. “He has a no-drink policy for her. He always stressed that to me. He doesn’t want her to drink a drop.”
In May 2022, a New York state judge appointed an independent conservator to manage Williams’ finances. The decision came after the TV star’s bank, Wells Fargo, froze her accounts, claiming she was “incompetent,” according to court filings.
