For those using Google’s payment system, it’s time to say goodbye to the standalone Google Pay app. As of June 4, 2024, Google will officially terminate the app in favor of his Google Wallet. Google says the move is aimed at simplifying its payment services and creating a more unified experience for users.
So what does this mean for you? Starting June 4th, the Google Pay app will no longer be available in the US. Google Wallet will continue as the primary platform for contactless payments, storing loyalty cards, managing transit passes, boarding passes, and more.
This measure will also remove some features of Google Pay. The first, and perhaps most notable, is peer-to-peer (P2P) payments. If you need to send money to a friend or request money from a friend, you’ll need to find another platform like the Cash app or Venmo. Additionally, you will no longer be able to view or manage your Google Pay balance within the app, but you will still be able to access this information and transfer funds to your bank account through the Google Pay website. The last feature to be deprecated is Google Pay’s “Search offers and deals” section, with Google suggesting you use the new deals in search instead.
If you currently use Google Pay in the US, it’s time to move to Google Wallet. Download the app, add your payment method, and start exploring. Please note that the June 4 deadline only applies to the United States. Google Pay will continue to operate in other countries, including Singapore and India.
The move represents a new development in Google’s approach to payment systems. What started as Google Wallet in 2011 has evolved through iterations like Android Pay and back again. While the removal of the Google Pay app may seem disruptive, it ultimately represents Google’s efforts to streamline its services and provide a more comprehensive user experience through Google Wallet. Google Wallet already boasts a much larger user base, operates in over 180 countries, and offers a wider range of features. If you don’t yet understand the Google Wallet platform, it’s time to embrace and understand this change.
